Faithful Friday: James Montgomery Boice

By Sarah Levesque (Rated G)

Dr. James Montgomery Boice was born on July 7, 1938 to Dr. and Mrs. G. Newton Boice. He grew up in Pittsburg, PA, but went to high school at Stony Brook School in Stony Brook New York. There he studied under school founder and theologian Frank E. Gaebelein. After high school he earned a Bachelor of Arts at Harvard in 1960. Two years later, Boice married Linda McNamara, with whom he would have three daughters. In 1963, Boice graduated Princeton Theological Seminary with a Bachelor in Divinity, afterwards earning a Doctorate in the Theology at University of Basel, Switzerland, in 1966.

While in Basel, Boice was asked to start a Bible study group. His group eventually grew into an evangelical church. In 1968, Boice became the minister of Tenth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, PA, where he would stay for the rest of his 61 years. During that time, he tripled his congregation, wrote a multitude of books and commentaries, started multiple schools and charitable organizations, taught and evangelized through the radio program The Bible Study Hour, and wrote lyrics to twelve hymns. In 1974, Boice began the Philadelphia Conference on Reformed Theology. Four years later, he became the chairman of the new International Council for Biblical Inerrancy. Later still, in 1994, Boice helped with the founding of the Alliance for Confessing Evangelicals.

Dr. James Montgomery Boice died on June 15, 2000 of liver cancer. May we be as dedicated to the Lord, His Word, and His work as Boice was.
