Theodore de Beze was born on June 24, 1519, in Vezelay, France. He studied to be a lawyer then set up practice in Paris, where he also wrote poetry. At one point he became very ill and, once he recovered, he sought out the famous reformation leader John Calvin, who was living in Geneva, Switzerland. There, Beza became a professor of Greek, then he travelled Europe preaching the Protestant cause.
In 1559, Beza helped Calvin found the Geneva Academy, the first major Calvinist school. When John Calvin died, Theodore Beza became the chief pastor of the school, a position he held till his own death on October 13, 1605. Beza is known for his many religious writings and sermons, many of which focused on discipline and authority, while others focused on history. Because of these notable achievements, Beza is known as Calvin’s successor and equal.
May we, like Theodore Beza, zealously work for the Kingdom of God.
