Faithful Friday: St. Gregory of Tours

By Sarah Levesque (Rated G)

Gregory of Tours was likely born in the Merovingian kingdom (now France) around the year 539. He had many important relations, which likely eventually helped secure his appointment to the bishopric. Be that as it may, Gregory was appointed bishop of Tours during the reign of King Sigebert and Queen Brunhild of East Francia in 573.

Gregory is best known for his work as a writer. He wrote ten volumes of history, seven books of miracles, and others on saints, the Psalms, and more, all while juggling the heavy religious and political duties of his office during a tumultuous era of upheaval, violence, and ignorance. Gregory died in Tours on November 17, likely in the year 594.

May we pray that we, like Gregory of Tours, will be given the grace to do all the works God has set before us.
