St. Timothy the Evangelist was born in Lystra, a city in Asia Minor. He was born to a Jewish mother, Eunice, a devout follower of Jesus Christ (2 Timothy 1:5). His father was Greek. The Apostle Paul discipled St.Timothy, who, by all accounts, was a devout young man. He was praised for his faith by the Apostle Paul in the book of Second Timothy. Eventually St. Timothy became pastor of the church at Ephesus, an important church to the Apostle Paul who used this church as the center of his missionary journeys around Asia.
The Bible contains 2 books written by the Apostle Paul to St. Timothy in which he calls “him a true son in the faith” (I Timothy 1:2). The letters encouraged him in his work as a pastor giving him explicit instructions on leadership and combating heresies within the church. St. Timothy was a great leader in church at Ephesus becoming Bishop of the region. Like his mentor, St. Timothy was martyred in 97 AD in the city where he ministered.
