Hush little darling, don’t say a word
I will tell you about the Mother of our Lord
And how one day a great angel came
Surprising her by calling her by name
The Lord had something special to ask
To see if she would do an important task
The angel began with “Hail, full of grace,
Would you help save the whole human race?
To be a part in God’s great plan
And bring eternal life back unto man.”
These words did fill her with fear
For a promise she made that was so dear
The prophets revealed a Child would come
The Son of God would leave His Home
To live among His people on Earth
To show them how to achieve grace and rebirth
But to do so meant He needed a mother
To take human flesh, to become our brother
She knew what was needed to create a child
But she had made a vow that was far from mild
She decided to give the angel a test
Which would put all her fears to rest
“How exactly is this to be done
For me, a virgin, to bear a Son?”
The angel’s reply was swift and true
“God’s power shall overshadow you
And place in you the Second Person of the Trinity
While a virgin you will forever be.”
This answer relieved the Lady
And soon she had her answer ready.
“Behold the handmaid of the Lord
Be it done according to your word.”
And from that very moment on
God’s power had given her a Son
And the rest, they say, is history
To bring man back into God’s graces and glory
