A Space Shanty

By Amanda Pizzolatto (Rated G)

Sailing, sailing, through the midnight sky
Reach out your hands and touch a star
Travelling through the vastness of space
We will continue to travel far

With no sun rising on the horizon
Days and nights blend into one
Time runs differently here
Keep working till the work is done

Sailing, sailing, through the midnight sky
Reach out your hands and touch a star
Travelling through the vastness of space
We will continue to travel far

Yet every day seems to pass quickly
As time continues to slip away
Counting down the hours until we’re back
Back to home, home to stay

Sailing, sailing, through the midnight sky
Reach out your hands and touch a star
Travelling through the vastness of space
We will continue to travel far

Further and further away from home
What discoveries will we find?
New planets and stars and satellites
New places and life of every kind

Sailing, sailing, through the midnight sky
Reach out your hands and touch a star
Travelling through the vastness of space
We will continue to travel far

It’s dark out there and cold and bleak
Lifeless floating debris and rocks
Yet find a blazing star and see
A life-filled planet where we can dock

Sailing, sailing, through the midnight sky
Reach out your hands and touch a star
Travelling through the vastness of space
We will continue to travel far

Try to make contact as best we can
With our limited knowledge of the land
Learn and work and play and grow
We might even add to our band

Sailing, sailing, through the midnight sky
Reach out your hands and touch a star
Travelling through the vastness of space
We will continue to travel far

But one day we will go home
Back to familiar sounds and places
Back to sights that we know well
And one of those will be your face

Sailing, sailing, through the midnight sky
Reach out your hands and touch a star
Travelling through the vastness of space
We will continue to travel far

Sailing, sailing, through the midnight sky
Past the sun, the stars, and the moon
Travelling through the vastness of space
Don’t worry, we’ll be home soon
