VaLENTine’s Day

St Valentine’s Day,
The feast of an obscure man
Forgotten by most
Who may have given his life to
Celebrate the marriage of a young man
And a young woman,
Observed by the masses
By feasting and loving and raising prices,
Marked by hearts, roses and chocolate.

Ash Wednesday,
The beginning of Lent,
The start of the season of repentance,
The wait until Easter joy,
Observed with Masses,
By fasting and prayer and almsgiving,
Marked with ashes and crosses.

This year, for me,
VaLENTine’s Day,
Another school day,
Observed with a prayer service,
Fasting, prayer, and lessons,
With leftover chocolate from yesterday’s celebration saved for tomorrow,
And a video chat tonight with my love
As we count down the days till the weekend.
