St. Helena, born in about 248 AD, was the mother of Emperor Constantine the Great. Born in apparently humble circumstances, and said to be a Christian at the time of her marriage, she bore her husband Constantus his only son. Shortly thereafter, however, Constantus divorced her to marry the daughter of an ally. The boy, Constantine, loved his mother very much, and stayed by her side through this whole ugly affair.
When Constantine was declared Emperor, he elevated his mother to her rightful position as dowager empress and decreed that everyone pay her homage. It was his mother’s influence that caused Constantine to embrace Christianity and make it the state religion.
After another personal tragedy, Helena went on pilgrimage to the Holy Land, and while she was there, ordered churches to be built, notably one at Bethlehem, and one at Jerusalem. While she was there, investigating an old temple of Venus, she found the fragments of the True Cross and other relics. For this reason, she is the patroness of Archeologists!
Helena was also a patron of other churches and was generous to the poor, her influence being wide as the Dowager Empress. When she died sometime around 330 AD, she was venerated and eventually her relics were transferred to Reims, France.
Like St. Helena, let us use our interests and talents for the Lord, and not just for ourselves.
