What It Truly Means To Be An American

By Billy Beauchesne (rated G)

It’s time we recall the true meaning of what it means to be an American… E pluribus unum: Out of many, one.

OUT OF MANY, ONE: No one has ever achieved sustained success or sincere fulfillment with an individualistic approach in life. In order to progress forward, we must shift the focus from ourselves and our own selfish desires. So many seek “complete control” and “complete self-freedom” without any regard to the greater good.

Think of when, as a child, a parent scolded you for doing something that may lead to injury. Nobody likes to be scolded. We may get upset and may not have the perspective or capability of understanding why we are being scolded. If only at the time we understood the larger picture; that we were not being scolded as a punishment, but for our greater good, then we would have been much more receptive.

For far too long we, as society, have been intellectually cheated and duped into believing what is “easy” to believe. Media consistently caters to our humanness and cultured need for quick gratification. News outlets feed us twisted headlines that quickly draw us in and oftentimes share stories laced with hearsay, opinions, and bias. It is time that we demand and seek the truth. We can all agree that the majority of sources, regardless of political standing, are grotesquely responsible for such actions and it’s time for this to cease. We all seek truth. As it says in John 8:32, “…you will come to know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

As a society we need to take a long, hard look into the mirror and examine our selfish attitudes and desires. If for a moment, only a moment, we are able to regain the morality and integrity of our culture, society will flourish.

President John F. Kennedy once said, “Ask not what your country can do for you — ask what you can do for your country.”

The Apostle Paul wrote, “I urge you, brothers and sisters,…that all of you agree in what you say, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and in the same purpose” (1 Corinthians 1:10).

It’s time to reengage our moral compass and reclaim our faith, our upstanding values, and our integrity that makes being an American so special.
