Reapers

by Samantha Terrell (Rated G)

“You shall not reap to the very edges of your field…leave them for the poor and the alien.”
-Leviticus 23:22

Reap to the edge,
Destroy the fence-row.
Make more crops
From which money grows.

The Corporate Farm will
Harvest all it can,
Though farmers’ own children
Be damned.

So, our grains – the first form of currency –
May prove to be the last.
Since the end promises to come quickly
In a world which refuses to make the poor its task.

  1. Well said. Thanks.

On our farm my father always left rows unharvested along each fence line for the critters.

I am happy now NOT to be up at 0400 and I have no animals larger than my two dachshunds, but I keep fresh water in the bee pools and drinking bowls, and seeds for the critters all year round. Labeled bird seed from the grocery store or pet shop store is expensive; sacks of chicken scratch from the feed store / farm store are much cheaper and appeal to a more diverse clientele of birds, squirrels, and other critters.

    Again, thanks.
